Baby (TaeNy) Steps

A/N: someone on my tlist (you know who you are) requested this. I apologize ahead of time for the crappy writing >_<

“But mommy, I want to stay with you,” whined Taeyeon, holding onto her mother’s hand.

“It’s okay, Taengoo-ah,” Mrs. Kim said, smiling at her daughter as she gently released their intertwined fingers. “I’ll be right here, okay?” She nudged her forward.

Eyeing the other kids running around the playground, Taeyeon took a few cautious steps towards them.

“Tag, you’re it!”

Two boys running past knocked Taeyeon backwards, and she tripped over something on the ground, falling flat on her butt.

She sat up, lip trembling and eyes filling with tears until she realized that the thing she had tripped over was actually a person.

And not just a person, but the prettiest girl she had ever seen. Who had now begun to cry.

Tears disappearing, Taeyeon bit her lip, unsure what to do.

“I…I’m sorry. I didn’t see you, and these boys knocked me over and and and…” She trailed off as the girl stopped crying to look at her.

Taeyeon didn’t know why, but she wanted, needed this girl’s forgiveness.

“I’m sorry,” she offered again, voice quiet as she hung her head.

The girl sniffled. “It’s okay,” she said, and Taeyeon looked up to see her wiping her cheeks.

“Wait.” Taeyeon reached out to stop the girl’s hand. “You’re making you face dirty.”

Without a second thought, she got to her feet and walked to her mom, who was already hurrying in her direction.

“Taeyeon-ah, are you all right?” her mother asked, concern creasing her face.

Taeyeon nodded. “I’m fine, mommy. May I have a tissue?” she requested politely, just like she had been taught.

“Oh, of course.” Handing her the tissue, Mrs. Kim watched, confused, as her daughter took the tissue and ran off.

Squatting in front of the girl, Taeyeon held out the tissue. “Here.”

“Thank you.” Wiping her eyes and face, the girl looked at Taeyeon. “…I’m Tiffany.”

The unfamiliar accent and sound knitted Taeyeon’s brows. “Ti…Tippany?”

She frowned and shook her head. “Tiffany. Ti-fah-nee,” she sounded out.

“Ti…fuh…fah…nee? Fah-ny.” Taeyeon repeated, testing out the new letter in her mouth, unsure if she was saying it right. “Ti-fah-ny,” she tried again.

Tiffany nodded, a smile lighting up her face. “You got it! Tiffany.”

“…Tiffany’s a weird Korean name,” she commented, saying the name again because she liked the way f’s felt on her lips.

A pout. “It’s not weird! I just like my American name more than my Korean name because it sounds silly.”

Taeyeon shrank into herself. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to call your name weird… It’s just…different,” she said, trying to explain. Searching for something to offer in return, she realized she hadn’t introduced herself yet. “If it makes you feel any better, my name is Taeyeon.” She wrinkled her nose. “My family always makes puns about my name.”

Tiffany giggled. “That does make me feel better. Hmm, Taeyeon and Tiffany… I like it!” She grinned at Taeyeon for a moment before her mouth formed an o, and she looked down at the ground. “That is, if you want to be friends with me…”

Taeyeon was nodding her head before Tiffany finished her question. “Would…would that be okay?” she asked quietly.

“Of course!” Tiffany exclaimed. Looking around them, she pouted again. “The other kids won’t be friends with me because I’m different and I’m from America.”

“Well…I think that’s kind of cool.” She kept her head down as she said those words, almost embarrassed.

Taeyeon glanced up to see Tiffany holding out her pinky. “Friends, then. Promise?”

She smiled back at last, linking her pinky with Tiffany’s. “Promise.”

*Note: Taeyeon means “calm” in Korean, which is why her family can make puns about her name. Aka “Taeyeon, you’re so calm today!”
